Pet Adoption Services

Adopting pet means that every pet is a living, feeling being who, more often than not, would make a wonderful companion if given a chance. Many service centers strive to increase those chances through pet adoption services and support of companion-animal sterilization... until none is homeless.

Decide first which pet you want to adopt. Your pet will depend on you throughout its life, and with proper care, may live more. Are you willing and able to care properly for it and provide it a stable home for that long? Don’t get pets without considering and planning for the costs for such a responsibility and many other things like

1) How much time can you spend with a pet? Pets are social creatures they will not be happy left out in the home alone. You must be committed to spending hours with your pet.
2) If you live in a small apartment, what kind of space can you provide for your pet? You must take this into consideration.
3) How much money can you set aside for the care and feeding of pet? You must buy food, pay for veterinary checkups, vaccinations and routine medical care, food bowls, collars, licenses, ID tags, leashes, carriers, etc. over the lifetime of your pet.
4) Before adopting find out all you can about the breed of your pet, even if it is a "mixed" breed.
5) How much training can you do? Training will make your pet much more compatible with you and with what you want to do.
7) Whatever pet you choose, you are making a long-term commitment. Your pet will need attention, love and respect from you: food and water are not enough. Consider your pet part of your family-that is what your pet will think about you, you are its pack.
8) You are responsible for your pet’s health.

Pet Care - Care of the Geriatric Dog

Generally speaking, a dog over the age of 8 is considered "old". Depending on the breed, your dog's lifespan will be anywhere from 7 to 17 years. A dog's "middle age" is usually from age 4 to 8, anything after that is a bonus and your dog is in "old age". Start your dog's "senior" years off by having a vet exam once yearly, so that you can keep pace with any condition that might develop. None of this article is intended to replace good veterinary care, which is your best insurance that your dog will live to a ripe old age.

All through life keep your dog at its optimum weight and do not allow it to become fat. Obesity is the biggest cause of other major health concerns in the dog, such as kidney and liver malfunction, diabetes and arthritis. Don't give too many treats - this will add pounds! If you do treat your dog a lot, give it pieces of its own kibble and deduct that amount from the amount you feed. Do not "self-feed", this can lead to digestive problems. Feed twice daily or once daily and pick the food up that is not eaten. This is also the best way to regulate the amount your are feeding your dog.

Old dogs sometimes lose their teeth - you can ensure they eat their food by adding water to the kibble and pre-soaking it. Remember however that this will lead to more plaque on the teeth, and brushing the dogs teeth daily will help to take care of this problem.

Access to fresh water is absolutely necessary. Always be sure that your dog has plenty of fresh water available, and as it gets older make sure, too, that your dog can get up and get to the water. If not, then take the water to the dog!

Walk your older dog as much as possible. Even if it doesn't walk too well, a short walk daily will keep its circulation going and provide some stimulation from the environment, besides which it gives the dog some quality time to be with you. Walking stimulates the blood circulation and keeps the heart muscles stronger.

Old dogs, even if they have had perfect joints often develop arthritis. Arthritis will be compounded by obesity... the BEST way to prevent this particular condition is to keep your dog skinny! A good way to prevent the severity of arthritis is to feed a food that is labelled "Senior" as most of these foods have the right combination of nutrients to prevent obesity, including chondroitin and sulfate. You can also find supplements which will contain these beneficial elements.

Old dogs do not move as easily. They may not be able to get up and move to a shady place if they are outdoors in the hot sun, and likewise to a warm place if they are outdoors in the cold. The best place to keep your old dog is inside. If you can't do this, provide shelter and be sure to check in extreme weather conditions that your dog is protected from the elements or can get to protection. Wherever they are, the older dog suffers more from joint pain, and good bedding is important to provide comfort. Keep a good supply of old quilts and rugs for bedding, and wash these frequently to prevent flea infestation. If the dog is outdoors, provide clean straw, and change it regularly.

Old dogs generally do not see as well so make sure that you don't introduce new or dangerous articles into the environment where your dog generally moves. If you do, then be sure to "introduce" the old dog to this new element, whether it be clothesline poles or new couches. Sometimes the old dog can't see this new item and will stumble into it.

Old dogs also need extra coat care. Since they spend most of their time lying down, it is possible that the underbelly can get inflammations or a matted coat. Check often that the dog is clean and free from mats. If your old dog no longer wants to be brushed, and this is often true of longer coated dogs, then shave the parts of the body that become the most matted, (under the tail, the belly, under the elbows, etc.).

As your dog grows older, the best rule of thumb is to pay attention to details. Such things as irregular breathing, episodes of panting, episodes of crying or whining, weakness in the rear legs...all these things should be reported to your vet. Keep abreast of any changes and give your dog as much good home care and vet care as you can and it will live longer and remain happier.

Pet Care - The Hyperactive Puppy

Puppies are like children. They can get into unimaginable difficulties when their environment is not structured.

Here is a basic checklist of environmental hazards:

Puppies can open loose cupboard doors. Buy cupboard door protectors or get out the good old duct tape and make sure that the cupboards that are low either can not be broken into or do not contain hazardous elements!

Puppies can chew light cords. Arrange your home so that light cords, TV cables, computer cords, and so on, are hidden behind heavy immovable furniture or are enclosed behind barriers.

Large Breed puppies can put their front feet onto ALL the counters. Push back items that they can get into, take them off the counters, or be prepared to have your most valuable items (such as your TV remote control) dragged off and chewed!

Clothing articles can be DEADLY. I personally have known several puppies around the age of five to six months that have died from ingesting socks or chewing on scatter rugs.... fabric often balls up and creates an intestinal blockage. By the time the vet discovers it, it is too late. Don't allow your puppy to drag around socks or old towels, take them away and substitute with a dog toy.

Common houseplants can be poisonous. Make sure you know which ones are, and keep them out of the environment where your puppy will be. You can find the poisonous ones through a quick check on the internet.

Household poisons used for insect or rodent control should be absolutely out of the question in the puppies' environment. Simply do not apply poisons in areas that your puppy has access to, under any circumstance!

Toys should be dog toys. Left over trucks from the kids' toy box are NOT GOOD. Items which have small parts which can be chewed off or swallowed are NOT GOOD. Likewise, most bones are NOT GOOD. Vets will tell you of the numbers of surgeries they have performed to remove bone shards from the intestines of dogs. If you must provide bones, the bigger "knucklebone" is a good choice because it will not shred off into sharp shards.

Sticks are the favorite as far as retrieving, but sticks in the mouth of running puppies are dangerous. They can jam that stick into their throat if they run into an immovable object, OR they can take out the eye of another dog or even a child. Use good dog toys for retrieving...and be sure the toys are not too small for the dog's mouth and can not be swallowed!

Nothing "settles down" a hyperactive puppy like a good exercise session. Do not over do, and be careful that you do not demand too much of your puppy before its young bones are ready....but go on walks, by all means. And make these walks a time to teach your puppy the basics of polite manners...sitting when you come to street corners, not barking at strangers that you meet. So that means these walks must be ON LEASH. (It's better exercise for you, that way, too!) After the "controlled" walk, a good run in a dog park, off leash, or a good swim in a nearby pond are excellent ways to burn off excess energy. The rule of thumb for walking distance for a pup is "no longer than 20 minutes" before six months of age.

Nothing is as important in the care of a puppy as regular vet checks. Be sure that your puppy is immunized at the right times, fed well, exercised well, and spends the majority of its time in a "puppy-safe" environment....and have fun bringing up your puppy!

Pet Care - There’s No Other Job Quite Like It

“Pets are such agreeable friends, they ask no questions and they pass no criticisms” said George Eliot about pet animals. Pets often reciprocate the love that their masters lavish on them by demonstrating various forms of affection including licking, hickeys, even love-bites.

There’s no other job quite like keeping a pet. Pet care is in fact a permanent job, and includes the very important functions of grooming and striving to maintain good pet health care. General pet supplies could be considered a definition of useful tools for grooming and keeping your pet in good health.

Pet Supplies:

An essential list of pet supplies for purchase could include the following: pet food and food dishes, pet id tags and collars, pet medications, supplements and tonics, etc. Some other items to consider are animal carriers, pet houses and furniture, pet beds, clothes, and pet jewelry.

Online Pet Supplies:

Online pet supplies are supplies that can be purchased from pet stores over the Internet. There are numerous pet grooming product manufacturers and pet-grooming stores selling their products online through their individual official websites.

Pet Grooming supplies:

Pet Health Care:

Pet health care is a very important responsibility of pet ownership. For puppies and kittens, or any other four-legged pets, important treatments would include giving a hygiene bath, cleaning, combing, brushing, checking ears, paws, teeth and underside of the tongue, nail trimming, removing fleas and insects, and fixing regular meetings with a professional veterinary. A good pet owner should follow a regular schedule of grooming sessions.

Pet care can require a lot of patience. Like children, pets often require special attention. A puppy, kitten or any other pet in its infancy needs to be handled with extreme care. In particular they must be groomed properly, fed carefully, and bedded properly.

Choosing A Pet:

The process of choosing a pet is very important. Choosing a pet depends on one’s preferences, but there are still some important things that should be kept in mind. One should always choose an animal of good breed. Secondly, the pet should be healthy especially if it is still in the initial stage of its life. A healthy young pet shows good fast growth.

People hire the services of these professional experts for the proper grooming of their pets. Professional pet grooming is becoming quite popular in United States, Canada, and European countries.

Pet Care, Keeping The Owner In Mind

What does pet care mean for you? Are you looking for tips on how to properly provide care for your pet, maybe you are looking for pet insurance coverage for your little critter, or possibly in need of information on grooming your pet, breeding, feeding, supplies and equipment. These are all the types of things we could use to provide proper pet care to our furry friends.

Whatever we need to make sure our pets are properly taken care of can be referred to as pet care. However, in most cases, we are talking about insurance for our pets, to ensure they receive the best care possible without breaking your bank. Whether your pet requires first aid treatment, dental care, flea treatment or emergency surgery, your pet heath care provider can take most of the financial impact off your hands. Your pet can be covered for as little as ten dollars, and considering an emergency surgery can easily reach amounts well over the thousand dollar mark, it almost seems like you cannot afford to go without pet health coverage. Not having a pet insurance plan, if it hasn't already done so, will cost you money.

If you think a pet insurance plan is not something you would like, there are other alternatives to provide proper pet care for your pet at a discounted price to you. There are companies such as PetAssure that offer discount packages, and your veterinarian may be able to lead you in the right direction by telling you where you can get pet wellness packages. Lets face it, making sure your pet gets the care it needs should not feel like a burden on you. And without coverage, those vet visits can add up, especially when surgery comes into play. To some people, it is a wise choice that will bring a feeling of relief when those unexpected vet bills arise.

Pet Diseases: Healthy Pets Make Healthy People

Pets are prone to many illnesses. Hence, they should be taken care of very well and also monitored regularly for any symptom of ill health to keep their well being. A pet can be a happy companion to human being only if it is healthy.

Some of the symptoms of pet diseases causing ill health:

Loss of appetite, excessive gain or loss of weight, excess water consumption, abnormal discharges of the nose, eyes etc., abnormal, difficult, uncontrolled waste elimination, lethargy, abnormal behavior, sudden viciousness, limping, abnormal lumps, finding difficult to get up or lie down, dandruff, open sores, dull coat or ragged coat, excessive head shaking, scratching, biting or licking any particular part of the body, tartar on the teeth, foul breath etc.

Common pet diseases:

Lyme disease:

This is an infectious disease spread by a tick, which is not larger than the head of the pin in size. It is caused by a bacterium called spirochete transmitted to the pets and humans by the tick bite. If not treated properly it may lead to heart diseases or neurological complications or joint damages and kidney related problems in the pets.

Infestation due to internal parasites:

Internal parasites like the hookworms, tapeworms, heartworms and roundworms rob the pets of important nutrients, causing fatigue, loss of appetite, anemia and even death. Especially puppies and kittens are very much susceptible to these kinds of infestations. This can be very well controlled and prevented.

Infestations due to external parasites:

Pets are affected by external parasites like the lice, mites, fleas and ticks. They are found everywhere and can cause extreme irritation to the pet leading to skin disorders and skin diseases. Ear mites can cause severe diseases and annoyance in the pet commonly in cats and dogs. Hence, it needs to be treated well by taking the pets to the veterinarian.

Rabies is one of the deadly pet diseases caused by a virus which attacks the pet’s nervous system. Normally rabies is transmitted by the bite from a rabid animal. It is not necessary that all rabid animals appear mad and foam at the mouth. Many infected pets can be very tame and calm. Rabies affects only mammals. It does not affect reptiles, birds, fish or amphibians.

Types of cancer in pets:

Cancer is a common pet disease and it accounts for almost 50% of the deaths of the pets over 10 years of age. Some cancer types like the breast cancer can be prevented to a large extent with early spaying, whereas other types of cancers are very difficult to be prevented since the causes are not known properly.

Commonly found cancer types are skin tumors -

More common among older dogs, but lesser among cats, breast tumors are seen both in dogs and cats. Early spaying can reduce their incidence.

Head and neck cancer –

The common disease is the mouth cancer more in dogs and lesser in the cats. Cancer in the nose also seen in dogs and cats, lymphoma is found in cats and dogs with an enlargement of one or more lymph nodes of the body, testicular tumors are seen in the dogs and rarely in cats and bone tumors are common among large breed dogs and rarely seen in the cats.

Pet Friendly Getaways

A recent survey from one of the nations leading pet care manufacturers asked Americans, if given a choice, would they prefer to travel with their pets? Over 70% of those Americans answered yes, they would prefer to travel with their pets. This is why many hotels, parks and other travel destinations are welcoming travelers with their companion animals. Before deciding to take your pet with you during your travel, make sure this is something your pet wants to do and not something that it is being made to do.

Take for instance, most dogs enjoy going for car rides and generally most cats don’t. You would most likely take your dog camping with you than you would your cat. Dogs seem to make the best travel companions than a cat would, especially on long car rides. Of course, there are those exceptions. Bottom line is your pet would much prefer to be near you than in a kennel somewhere, but only if this is a good idea. You don’t want to take a dog with you that has panic attacks in the car or one that will crawl all over you while you are trying to drive.

If you plan on traveling with your pet, consider these travel tips to make your trip as safe and enjoyable as possible.

1. Schedule your pet a check up with its veterinarian and ask for a certificate of health, along with proof of current vaccinations such as the rabies, distemper, and bordetella. It would also be a good idea to have your pet micro chipped, in case it should get lost. You would want to have your pet returned to you as quickly as possible, especially if you are traveling out of state.

2. If your pet is on medication, bring plenty of it so you’re not running out of medication when it’s needed. It would also be a good idea to have your veterinarian contact information in case you loose the medication, so the vet can call in a prescription should the other get lost.

3. Is your pet well socialized? A well socialized pet will travel more easily and tolerate the stress of traveling better than a pet that is not used to be in a car or around other people. You want the trip to be enjoyable for both you and your pet.

4. Is your pet well behaved? Although there are now many places that allow pets, no one wants to listen to a dog barking all night or during the day. You also want to keep your pet occupied so it’s not chewing on the hotel furniture or going potty on the carpet. You don’t want your hotel room to smell like a kennel and neither does the hotel staff or your next door neighbors.

5. Find out ahead of time that the hotel you make reservations at will accept pets. You don’t want to assume that there is a pet friendly hotel in a town you intend to stay in and when you get there, you’re turned away for having a pet or the one’s that allow the pets are all booked up.

6. Make sure your pet wears a collar with tags. One tag should be a current rabies tag and the other tag should have the dogs name, your name, address, town, state, and phone numbers. If you have a cell phone, add your cell phone number to the ID tag.

7. Most people choose to travel with their pets by car. Airline travel can be very stressful for pets, because they are treated like cargo and not like living beings. If you choose to travel by air plane, then contact the airline and ask them what their policy is for pets. Some airlines will allow small dogs to be a carry on as long as you have the proper airline carrier that is found in most pet stores.

You should also consider bringing along your pets food dishes, bed or pillow and a couple of its favorite toys. Having familiar items along for the trip can help ease the stress of traveling and make the trip more enjoyable for both you and your animal companion.

Pet Grooming Made Easy

One of the most asked questions that I get before someone buys a puppy is does the breed require much grooming. Some potential owners don’t mind and the others do. This article is for the latter and how you can make pet grooming easier. In order to groom your dog you have to get you dog use to water. There are several steps that you need to take in order to accomplish the task.

Dogs do not like to take baths. Lets face it you are going to groom your pet properly you are going to have to give him the dreaded bath. One of the ways you can start getting your dogs to like water is to introduce your dog to it. If you have a swimming pool take your dog out there with you. Depending on the size of your dog you can sit the dog on your lap as you float around. You can also have a friend stand at one side of the pool and you at the other and put your dog in there. Both of you can encourage the dog to come to the other. Take the dog to the lake for the day and get you dog in the water. If you do this often you will find it easier to get your dog in the bathtub. In fact some dogs do like to take baths. One word of caution is don’t just throw the dog into the water as that may scare him badly and then you’ll have to start from square one.

In the bathtub your dog should feel relaxed. If he isn’t quite use to the water yet you can say soothing words to help him. The sound of your voice can reduce tension in your dog. You dog loves you and loves to hear your voice of calm gentle words.

Make the bath as comfortable as possible. If you’re scratching, scraping and pulling his hair out he will be on the edge. When you were a kid did you like it when your mom washed your own head? Enough said. Keep the water out of his eyes if you can and their nose away from the faucet. They will feel like they are drowning. Another relaxer for your dog is to take your time. Give your dog a message. Talk to them while you are doing it. Nothing like have fingers rubbed all over your back and it’s real easy with the soap on your dog.

Grooming does take patience. You can incorporate the kids help as they love to do it when they are little. Consistency is the key. It may take up to six months to get your dog use to the water. It doesn’t have to be a chore when you get the whole family involved. If after trying these suggestions and you dog does not respond well, you may need to go to a professional.

Pet Insurance

I don’t have to tell you that the cost of health care is skyrocketing. If you have been to the vet lately, you know that health care for pets is also getting more and more expensive.

Various and better treatment options are also available these days, and our pets are living longer because of them.

Pet health insurance has been available for a number of years, but is just now beginning to be more common. Pet insurance is more like major medical policies than the comprehensive policies most of us have. The pet health policies don’t cover routine office visits (although riders may be available from some companies) or immunizations.
You are free to use any veterinarian that you choose, and to opt for whatever tests or treatment you desire.

There are no co-pays. You pay the full amount then submit a claim for reimbursement.
Reimbursements are based on occurrence, rather than the treatment. Insurance companies selling health insurance for people usually set acceptable fees for procedures, and determine which procedures they will cover.

Most pet insurance policies will cover any procedure or test for illnesses and injuries that they cover. They will pay up to a certain amount for each occurrence of that injury or illness, up to the policy limit.

Certain illnesses may be excluded, as are any pre-existing conditions. The excluded illnesses and conditions may be breed specific and vary by company and policy.

Some policies have additional coverage for items such as accidental death of the pet, lost pet recovery, spay-neuter procedures and other extras. Some plans will charge the same premium as your pet ages (based on its age when you sign up), and others will increase as the pet gets older. Most companies have an age limit for beginning coverage.

There are two major carriers, offering a variety of policies. They are PetCare Pet Insurance (, 888-899-4875) and Pethealth Inc., owned by Petco. Pethealth offers insurance under a number of different names, including ShelterCare and PetCare (

Premium costs range from $10 to $22 a month for cats, and from $11 to $75 a month for dogs, depending on age, breed and coverage chosen.

The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates that the average dog owner will spend just under $500 per year on vet bills. It is hard to know whether you will save money or not by purchasing insurance. Certainly in the case of catastrophic illness or injury the insurance could be of great benefit. Like all insurance policies, you purchase it in the hopes that you never need to use it, but you pay a lot of money “just in case”.

When deciding if pet insurance is right for you, consider the pet’s lifestyle. If it is mostly an indoor pet, the chances of it becoming ill or injured will be less than if it lives outside a great deal of the time.

One great benefit of having the insurance is that it will allow you to do more for your pet if it does become ill. The peace of mind you may get from having pet insurance may be worth the cost.
